Winding order of Meshes

I am working with the surface meshes in the dataset.

For the calculations I want to perform (e.g. volume of the object) the winding order of the vertices is important.

The standard convention is to use the CCW ordering of the vertices when viewing the object from the outside.

Are the mesh files provided with the CCW winding order?

I am using the pymeshlab library to load the surface mesh and calculate the volume, which turns out to be negative. I am not sure if pymeshlab follows this convention either.

Any insights would be appreciated.

A bit late to the game here, but in case anyone else wonders how to do this, it's explained in the ReadMe.txt:

"Each zip file is named by the synset noun offset as an eight-digit zero padded string. For example, bench is contained within 02828884.zip since the WordNet synset offset for bench is 02828884 (you can browse WordNet 3.1 online)."

So, for example the "bottle" synset is "02876657", so changing the zip link above from "shapenet.cs.stanford.edu/shapenet/obj-zip/02828884.zip" to "shapenet.cs.stanford.edu/shapenet/obj-zip/02876657.zip" downloads a zip file including all bottles.

Polygon mesh?

When I view the objects from the "Taxonomy viewer" panel, I found many models are composed of n-gon meshes (e.g. rectangles). But after I download the dataset, I find all of them are composed of triangle meshes. It seemes that all n-gon faces are converted to traingle fraces. Why? Can I get the n-gon mesh version?

I just downloaded ShapeNetSem dataset. It has .obj and .mtl files. Previously I was using .off files and create dataloaders for that, but now the dataset has .obj files. How can I import .obj files as point clouds in Python? I don't intend to use Pytorch 3D.

I found a bunch of things under "kitchen" that I really liked. The wnlemmas for it were just "stove" though. When I found this folder in the dataset it didn't include any of the designs I was looking for. Then, when I searched on the website for these items under the name "stove" they didnt come up?? How the heck do you find things on this dataset and why is it so unnecessarily hard? Also, it appears that none of the word net offsets match the dataset anymore?

How can I find these designs still? Any advice?

For shapenet v2,

v_norm = (v-centroid) / norm(diag),

where:

'centroid' is the mean point of all vertices of the mesh
'diag' is the diagonal vector of the bounding box

I've done some extensive research and finally find the answer:

For shapenet v1, v1_norm = (v-center) / norm(diag)
For shapenet v2, v2_norm = (v-centroid) / norm(diag)

where:

'diag' stands for the bounding box diagonal vector, calculated by 'max' - 'min' from the json.
'center' stands for the bounding box center, calculated by ('max'+'min')/2. from the json.
and the 'centroid' stands for the mean point of all mesh's vertices, from the 'centroid' in the json.

so, v1_norm = v2_norm + (centroid - center) / norm(diag)

and v2_norm = v1_norm + (center - centroid) / norm(diag)

After re-scale, the rotation matrix (left-multiply):

from v2 to v1: np.array([[0, 0, 1], [0, 1, 0], [-1, 0, 0]])

I understand that each model is normalized to fit within a unit cube centered at the origin. I verified this by checking several .obj files and find the vertice coordinates are all between 0.5 and -0.5. However, the min/max value of the coordinates does not equal -0.5/0.5, and the origin does not match the center of mass. Is there a normalization rule shared among the dataset? or among objects in the same category?

I think I found the answer. I misunderstood the explanation in README.

The norm of (max(x)-min(x), max(y)-min(y), max(z)-min(z)), which I think is the diagonal distance of the bounding box, is close to 1. I also found that (max(x)+min(x))/2, (max(y)+min(y))/2, (max(z)+min(z))/2 are all close to 0, which means the center of bounding box is aligned to the origin. This should be the normalization rule.

Hi,

I am using Blender to import the ShapeNetSem objects. I am scaling them down via the corresponding scale factors included in the metadata.csv file. However, the results seem quite unrealistic most of the times.

For example, a drinking cup (wss.75dd1eb981f15ad166ab797924e689f7) is 26x10x10 (height x width x heigh) cm.

Or, a wineglass (wss.9d506eb0e13514e167816b64852d28f) is 36x13x13 cm. A normal wineglass is definitely not 36 cm high.

I wonder how these dimensions were generated, and why are they so unrealistic?
